Born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1962, Andrew showed an early interest in both drawing and cars, so the two were combined later when he became an automotive designer, lerning the disciplines at Coventry University then at the Royal college of Art in London.

Begining his career at Volskwagen in 1986, Andrew McGeachy later joined the teaching staff at Art Center Europe, the Swiss annex campus of the famous Pasadena school (www.artcenter.edu). While there, he developed his current impressionistic, dynamic painting style which was a breakaway from a previous tighter illustrative approach. The high degree of precision in earlier work has proven good training as now a detail or volume can be indicated in a more natural and spontaneous way rather than being labouriously rendered which might risk being lifeless and overworked. Now relatively large canvases are attacked with acrylic paint in a celebration of vibrant colour.

Perhaps paradoxically for a designer, there has always been a higher degreee of passion for vehicles from the past, especially 1930s Grand Prix Cars and 1950s Le Mans racers with their functional but evocative, characterful forms.

Andrew McGeachy now works as a freelance automotive and product designer, involved in a variety of projects, activities which run in parallel with his artwork. Paintings are completed at will or as private and commercial commissions. Recent work has included a series of paintigs for Bentley Motors, posters for the L’Age d’Or Lanvin at Monlhery near Paris, the Montreux Offshore power boat race and the exclusive Villa d’Este Concourse d’Elegance.

Switzerland has unexpectedly become home as originally the involvement with Art Center was foreseen for only one semester in fall 1989. Now a newly built, self designed house and studio is shared with his wife Louise, their three daughters and Billy the cat.
